Turkey vs Wales
Euro 2020, Group A
Date: Wednesday, 16 June 2021
Kick-off at 17:00 UK/ 18:00 CET
Venue: Baku Olympic Stadium (Azerbaijan).
Turkey and Wales battle it out for their first win at Euro 2020 after an unimpressive showdown in their first group game.
The Italians ran riot in Rome and crushed the Crescent-Stars 3-0 in the tournament opener on Friday.
The head-coach Senol Gunes got his tactics wrong and all they did was let the opposition have possession inside their own half and this was nothing but a suicidal plan.
Despite the likes of Burak Yilmaz, Yusuf Yazıci and Hakan Calhanoglu coming on the back of excellent seasons, the Turks created nothing and the defeat of that magnitude was nothing less than deserved.
Meanwhile, Wales struck late to salvage a point against Switzerland, and we got our analysis and prediction for this Euro 2020 correct. It was Kieffer Moore who handed the team a vital point in the 74th minute after Breel Embolo gave Swiss just after half-time.
Yet, Rob Page has some work to do ahead of the second game, because the result would have been different if it was not for some world class saves from Danny Ward between the posts. Creating chances from open play remains a problem too, the team is too dependent on set-pieces.
Turkey Team News
None of the players performed well in the defeat to Italy, yet we do not see a reason for Gunes to change formation or eleven against Wales, unless for some final minute injuries.
Turkey Predicted Starting Eleven (4-1-4-1)
Cakir – Meras, Soyuncu, Demiral, Celik – Yoksulu – Karaman, Tufan, Yazici, Calhanoglu – Yilmaz.
Wales Team News
Rob Page used just 2 substitutes in the game against Switzerland and that too very late in the game. Therefore, we expect no change in the Wales starting eleven against Turkey.
Wales Predicted Starting Line-up (4-1-4-1)
Ward – Roberts, Mepham, Rodon, Davies – Allen – James, Ramsey, Morell, Bale – Moore.
Turkey vs Wales Head-to-head
- Wales lead the overall head-to-head against Turkey with 3 wins, 1 draws and 2 losses from 6 meetings.
- Their last duel was during the World Cup qualifiers in 1997, a thriller won by Turkey on a crazy 6-4 full-time scoreline.
- Back in 1980, Wales handed Turkey one of their heaviest defeats with a 4-0 ft score.
- Both teams have scored in only 1 of their 6 match-ups.
- This is the first time these teams are meeting in a major tournament and neutral venue.
Turkey vs Wales Prediction
As mentioned at the start, Senol Gunes got it all wrong against Italy. A repeat is not expected here, the squad has enough quality and we could see a huge improvement in the approach and attitude on the pitch on Wednesday.
Wales were lucky to have drawn Switzerland, thanks to Danny Ward becoming Spiderman on goal with a combination of poor finishing from Vladimir Petkovic’s men. On Wednesday, they are coming against a team that plays more expansive football and is physically strong and defends set-pieces well.
All these are indicating a bad day for Bale and co at Baku and as a punter, my eyes are on the best possible price in betting markets
