South Africa vs Ghana
World Cup 2022 Qualification – Africa
Date: Monday, 6 September 2021
Kick-off 17:00 UK/ 18:00 CET
Venue: FNB Stadium, Johannesburg.
South Africa welcome Ghana in the matchday 2 of the World Cup 2022 Qualification’s African leg.
Bafana Bafana started the campaign on a poor note, held to a 0-0 draw at Zimbabwe. This is a fixture they cannot afford to lose, and this could end their hopes to progress to the next round.
Also, South Africa tries to put behind a disappointing African Cup of Nations qualification campaign, where they finished third behind Ghana and Sudan. They lost it on the final matchday with the loss to Sudan when a draw was enough to secure the berth to continental competition.
South Africa’s form looks good on paper as they are unbeaten in the last 8, however 6 of them came in the low key COSAFA Cup.
Ghana on the other hand started with a narrow 1-0 win against Ethiopia. Mubarak Wakaso scored the goal midway through the first half in an overall lacklustre performance by the Black Stars.
Head-coach Charles Akonnor will be calling for improvements here against a team that troubled them some 6 months ago.
Ghana’s form coming to this match is only decent, winning just twice in the last 6 across all competitions, drew and lost 2 each.
South Africa vs Ghana Head-to-head
- Ghana are unbeaten in the last 6 h2h meetings with South Africa, 2 wins and 4 draws.
- South Africa registered their last win over Ghana back in 2011, 2-1 at African Nations Championship.
- Their last duel at a World Cup qualification campaign happened in 2004/05. Ghana won both legs, 3-0 at home and 2-0 away.
South Africa vs Ghana Prediction
Ghana is the better team on paper, mostly due to the quality players playing their trade in Europe. However they rarely managed to bag positive results in recent travels.
South Africa have a good account of themselves at this ground and they will take a lot of confidence from the 1-1 draw against Ghana in March
