Newcastle United have a chance to finish this Premier League season on the ultimate high, as they host champions Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
Steve Bruce’s side will not be able to finish higher than 13th, their current position, but could record the club’s highest points tally since the 2013/14 campaign.
However, in order for that to happen they need to become only the fourth team this season (after Watford, Manchester City and Arsenal) to inflict a league defeat on the Reds, who have actually won just once across their last five visits to Tyneside.

Players to watch:
Newcastle United: It could potentially be another summer of upheaval at Newcastle United even though under Steve Bruce they are finishing this campaign on a strong note. The ownership status of the club has dominated headlines in recent months, but last summer they hit the jackpot in recruiting Allan Saint-Maximin from Nice. The France U21 international subsequently repaid the faith placed in him by the Magpies. Even though he’s bagged three goals, Saint-Maximin’s tireless running and skill on the ball have proven consistent weapons, and he’ll no doubt be relishing facing Liverpool’s energetic full-backs.
Liverpool: There’s a strong chance Klopp will field a number of fringe players in this contest but with the Reds a win away from registering a club-record 99-point total, expect at least two of their regular front-three starters appearing from kick off. Mohamed Salah, in particular, is a goal shy of reaching 20 league strikes and returning to St James’ Park will bring back painful memories as it was here last season that saw him stretchered off after suffering nasty head injury. He managed to score on that occasion before his withdrawal, and if Salah manages to do so again it will be five consecutive matches he’s scored against the Geordies.
Scoreline prediction: Newcastle United 1-3 Liverpool
