Mexico vs Costa Rica
World Cup Qualification CONCACAF
Date: Sunday, 30 January 2022
Kick-off at 23:00 UK / 00:00 CET
Venue: Estadio Azteca.

Mexico, historically being the most successful national team in the CONCACAF region, has had a largely poor campaign by their standards.

However, with them currently within the direct spots for the WC and with five games left to be competed, it is unlikely they miss out on their 8th consecutive appearance in the World Cup.

Costa Rica meanwhile are looking to get into that inter confederation play-offs spot and possibly even beyond. With solid results in recent games, a win here would work wonders for the club in making their way to their 3rd consecutive WC appearance.

El Tri on the last match day managed to snatch all three points away from a 10-man Jamaica team as they scored two late goals to end the match with a score line of 1-2 away from home.

This was preceded by back to back losses for the nation. Following which they now occupy 3rd position in the table, three points clear of 4th place Panama.

Los Ticos meanwhile, secured a narrow 1-0 win against Panama in their most recent fixture at home.

Following the result, they are now just two points behind the latter mentioned team in 5th place. The result was also their second on the bounce and third in five outings.

Mexico vs Costa Rica Head-to-head

  • La Sele has not defeated the Mexicans in nine previous meetings.
  • All but one of their last eight clashes has witnessed two or fewer goals in regulation time.
  • The only win for the visitors on Mexican soil came in 2001.

Mexico vs Costa Rica Prediction

The hosts have scored just twice in the first half in their last five qualifying games at home. Whereas their opponents have found the back of the net just once in their last seven games on the road across all competitions. Therefore, I have backed a goalless first half.

The hosts have conceded just thrice across all competitive fixtures at home since 2020. Furthermore with them losing just once at home since 2018 and their opponents winning just once on the road since 2020, expect the hosts to register the win and a clean sheet.
