Brighton vs Man Utd build-up, pre-match team news & previous line-ups:
Granted, the Red Devils beat Luton Town 3-0 in the EFL Cup in midweek, but the wounds from that home loss to Roy Hodgson’s side — which saw former United forward Wilfried Zaha score twice — will still hurt and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will want his side to get back on track in the Premier League as soon as possible.
But United will find it anything but easy against a Brighton side which ran out 3-0 winners against Newcastle United last time out, while the Seagulls gave Chelsea as good as they got in a 3-1 opening-weekend defeat, too.
Brighton (vs Newcastle United): Ryan; White, Dunk, Webster; Lamptey, Bissouma, Alzate, March; Trossard, Connolly, Maupay.
Man Utd (vs Luton Town): Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Williams; Fred, Matic; Mata, Van de Beek, Lingard; Ighalo.
Yves Bissouma will serve the second of his three-match suspension when United come to town, while Jose Izquierdo, Florin Andone and Christian Walton are all sidelined. Tariq Lamptey is a doubt with a groin problem, his absence would be a huge blow to Graham Potter given his early-season form.
Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones remain sidelined for the visitors, who should see Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood all restored to the starting line-up.
Players to watch:
Brighton: If Brighton are to improve on their 15th-place finish from last season, they simply must improve on their 39-goal tally across the 38 games. Last season’s top scorer Neal Maupay set the standard for his campaign in the Seagulls’ last match, grabbing two goals and an assist in a 3-0 thrashing of Newcastle United. On his day, the Frenchman is Brighton’s most exciting attacker and he’ll be looking to exploit any potential weaknesses in the Man Utd backline here.
Man Utd: By virtue, this increases the pressure placed upon Harry Maguire to hold Solskjaer’s defence together. Many ridiculed the world-record fee the Red Devils paid Leicester to secure his services last summer but financial matters are out of his control and there’s no denying he is easily Man Utd’s most reliable centre-back. Can he bring the best out of his fellow defenders ahead of a tough test on the south coast?
Scoreline prediction: Brighton 1-1 Man Utd
