Chelsea began their Carabao Cup campaign for this season with a 6-0 thrashing of Barnsley in the third round. Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz – who scored the first goal of his Chelsea career – gave the blues a 2-0 lead going into the break. The blues then ran riot in the second half as Havertz completed his hattrick with Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud completing the 6-goal win. Here’s how the Chelsea players rated.
Made saves upon saves in the match to ensure Chelsea kept the clean sheet. An excellent performance by the 38-year old. Deserves to start against West Brom at the weekend if Édouard Mendy isn’t ready.
The captain could do no wrong on the right side. A fine display by Dave as the Chelsea fans are accustomed to seeing.
Produced yet another excellent display after his great showing against Liverpool last weekend. It would be a mistake if Chelsea were to loan out the defender for this season.
A great debut by the Brazilian. Show signs of rustiness at the start of the match but grew into the game and ensured the blues got their first clean sheet of the season.
One of the surprise performers in the game. Was great at left back. Excellent as a right winger late in the game. The Italy international surely made a case to stay at Chelsea this season.
Barkley gave a reminder of his importance to the Chelsea squad with a classy performance in the middle of the park. Held the ball well. Passed well in tight spaces. Got his goal. Should have gotten the second but shot wide with an open goal before him.
Another fine display by the Croatian. Did everything he’s known for superbly. Gave away the ball more than once though.
A disappointing night it was for the young England international. This was a night he was supposed to impress but he started it by failing to bury an early chance provided by Havertz with just the goalkeeper to beat. He never recovered in the game as he lost possession quite a few times and found himself passing backwards on different occasions during Chelsea attack.

A perfect performance by the German as he scored his first hattrick in England and provided one assist. The assists should have been more than one had Hudson-Odoi and Mason Mount taken the chances he created for both of them.
Another great night for the youngster. Worked hard and was part of the majority of Chelsea’s attacking plays. Got an assist for his efforts but couldn’t get his goal despite getting two big opportunities. A combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping cost him.
Abraham came into this match competing with Giroud for the second choice striker spot. His performance in the match could earn him a place in Chelsea’s starting lineup this weekend. A goal and two assists were the reward for his excellent play while his link up play with Havertz was top notch.
Could do nothing wrong. Showed why he is currently Chelsea’s first choice centre back with a great display.
Marked his debut with a fine assist for Giroud’s goal. Impressed with his general play.
Giroud made more than enough impact in the few minutes he spent on the pitch. His link up play was superb and could have had two assists within a few minutes of coming on as Barkley and Mount were not able to bury their chances. Finally took laws into his hand and got his goal. Has given Lampard a selection headache for the next match.
