The January transfer window has been open since the first day of the year, but will be slammed shut in just a few days time. There’s a lot happening in the transfer rumour mill, and there’s a lot of news about Chelsea making the headlines, as the Blues seek to become a force to be reckoned with under new manager Thomas Tuchel. So without wasting further time, here are the biggest Chelsea stories making the headlines this morning:
Roman to splash the cash on Haaland
Of Course, anyone following football knows Erling Braut Haaland. The 20-year old has been on fire since breaking onto the scene with RB Salzburg, before he sealed a move to German giants Borussia Dortmund. In short, he is one of the best young prospects and top strikers in world football, and arguably the best finisher. He is certainly the type of player an elite club would want in their team.
Unfortunately his talent means he would cost a fortune, and very few clubs can afford to spend massively thanks to how the coronavirus pandemic affected finances of clubs worldwide. Well, Chelsea are one of them.
Despite the pandemic, Roman Abramivich has cash to splash, as shown by the summer transfer window last year. And he may be willing to go into the marker again, as reports claim he is willing to splash the cash of Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian has a release clause of €75million which can be activated from the end of next season. But in order to avoid competition, Roman may be willing to spend much more to get his signature this summer.
Billy Gilmour is one of the most promising young prospects at Chelsea, but he has found game time increasingly hard to come by. The arrival of Thomas Tuchel, who seems to fancy the senior members of the squad in that position, means Gilmour’s chances of getting more game time may not improve. And with an eye on getting a call-up for the Scotland national team for the upcoming Euros, the 18-year old has reportedly handed in a request to be sent out on loan till the end of this season.
So we may see Gilmour leave on loan in the next couple of days.
In his unveiling conference, manager Thomas Tuchel reiterated that he is a huge fan of N’golo Kante, and has been following him for years. He then said that the Frenchman operates best in a double six, as in a double pivot (midfield two). This may be a hint as to how he wants to set up his midfield. We saw Jorginho and Kovacic against Wolves, so don’t be surprised if we see a two-man midfield a lot more, as opposed to the 4-3-3 usually deployed by Frank Lampard.
Another player who has found playing time hard to come by is Marcos Alonso. He was a key part of the squad for years, helping to win the Premier League and FA Cup under Conte, and the Europa League under Maurizio Sarri. But since the arrival of Ben Chilwell, he has hardly gotten any playing time, with Emerson Palmieri preferred as second choice.
He may now be set to depart, as reports claim Barcelona will look to land the Spaniard. La Blaugrana are looking for cover for ageing left back Jordi alba, with summer signing Junior Firpo failing to convince. They are in a precarious financial situation which handicaps their ability to spend much, so they are looking for cheap cover, hence their interest in Alonso. They reportedly plan to sign the 29-year old, whose contract expires in 2023, on a season long loan this summer, before making the move permanent after that.
So, those are the biggest Chelsea news making the headlines at the moment. We’ll definitely hear more interesting stories as time progresses.
