Frank Lampard ‘wants Thiago Silva to take over as captain at Chelsea’ with Brazil defender poised to replace Cesar Azpilicueta ahead of his Stamford Bridge medical tomorrow
- Former PSG defender Thiago Silva looks set to sign a two-year deal with Chelsea
- The Brazilian centre-back is expected to undergo a medical later this week
- It is thought that Frank Lampard wants to make the 35-year-old his captain
Frank Lampard is planning on making Thiago Silva his Chelsea captain, should his free transfer to Stamford Bridge be completed.
The Brazilian stated that he had played his final game for Paris Saint-Germain in the aftermath of Sunday’s Champions League final, the Ligue 1 side having lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.
PSG boss Thomas Tuchel is desperate for the 35-year-old to stay in the French capital, but it appears the defender’s mind is made up.
Lampard could end up breaking spending records this summer with some huge signings
‘It was my last game in Paris. I am sad. I apologise to the fans,’ Silva said following the defeat against Bayern.
‘I thank all the fans for their love. I will return to Paris and this club that I love in another role.
‘I want to play three to four years still and be part of Brazil team in the Qatar World Cup.’
Frank Lampard is closing in on the experienced central defender he wanted this summer, and he’s going to do more than just warm the bench.
Thiago Silva is closer than ever to joining Chelsea, and according to the Daily Mail today Lampard is so keen for him to lead from the front that he’s going to make him captain.
We doubt that the manager is going to take the armband off Cesar Azpilicueta after years of loyal service, but we can imagine Silva being made the nominal vice-captain administratively, but acting as the leader on the pitch.
Azpi can still exchange pennants with the other team, and do the extra media duties expected of a captain, but Silva will be the leader at the back this team was crying out for for large swathes of last season, and in fact some time before that
