Chelsea have been knocked out of the Carabao cup by fellow epl side Spurs.
The blues who are 7 times winners of the cup competition, failed to make it past the second round of the cup tie as they lost on penalties, by 5-4 with Mount missing the last kick of the encounter.
Chelsea controlled the first half of the game, but a sloppy second half showing meant that they had to pay dearly, as Spurs were able to level things towards the closing states of the game.
One person who should be blamed for the poor result should be Frank Lampard.
1. Why play Mount for 90 minutes:
The English midfielder was no doubt Chelsea’s best player in their last game against Westbrom, as he was key in staging a come back over the weekend.
But his performance in the cup tie against Spurs are is one that needs questioning. Mount was below par as he underperformed in the encounter.
He looked tired, and should have been taking off by Lampard, but rather the coach preferred to keep him till 90 minutes, and he even went ahead to miss the last kick of the game.
2. Choice of substitutions:
The second half display of Chelsea was purely below average, the blues lacked creativity in midfield as the likes of Jorginho and Mount, were unable to bring energy and flair to the Chelsea game.
Instead of Frank Lampard to make changes in midfield that would have changed the game, he decided to keep both players on the pitch instead of bringing in creative players, like Ross Barkley or a Kai Harvetz.
3. Final spot kick taker:
Yes everyone misses spot kicks, but why hand the decisive penalty kick to Mason Mount when there was a Jorginho or Aziplicueta.
The 21 year old lacked the nerves to take the final kick of the game for Chelsea, as he missed it and blew away their chances of winning the competition, and probably a trophy this season.
Lampard really has time running out at Chelsea, and if he doesn’t get things right he might face a sack in no time
