‘Concrete’ Chelsea talks ‘on’ for classy midfielder
Chelsea-linked Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo
Chelsea continue to work on a deal for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo ‘behind the scenes,’ according to reports.
The Ecuador international has caught the attention of several top clubs after putting in some admirable performances for the Seagulls last season.
Indeed, Caicedo was one of Brighton’s most important players as Brighton secured a historic sixth-place finish. Now, Mauricio Pochettino is pushing to sign him this summer.
This comes after Mason Mount signed for Manchester United on Wednesday. As a result, Chelsea will need to bring in another midfielder to replace him.
While Caicedo is more of a defensive option than Mount, he certainly has the quality to slot straight into the Blues midfield.
Also, he is more than capable of protecting the back line. Something that N’Golo Kante excelled at. Kante has also left Stamford Bridge this summer, so, Pochettino needs to replace him, too.
Chelsea have had Caicedo on their radar for some time. They, along with Arsenal, attempted to sign him in January. But, Roberto de Zerbi refused to sell him at that time.
Since, Caicedo has signed a new contract at the Amex Stadium. But, it’s no secret that he wants to join a ‘bigger’ club this summer.
Romano: Chelsea talks for Caicedo ‘quiet’ but ‘on’
Now, according to reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are working hard behind the scenes to sign Caicedo this summer.
On Twitter, he wrote: “Chelsea and Brighton are working on Moisés Caicedo deal. Negotiations are by direct talks club to club, as revealed last week.
“Caicedo said yes to Chelsea months ago and deal up to clubs. Talks on. ‘Quiet’ in public but concrete behind the scenes; it still takes time.”
Since signing for Brighton in 2021, Caicedo has made 53 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea. In the process, he has scored two goals and made three assists.
As mentioned, his best attribute is his ability to break up opposition attacks. Last term, he averaged 2.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per match. Statistically, this makes him one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Chelsea can seal a deal for the Brighton star.
With personal terms already agreed, the only thing left for the Blues to negotiate is his transfer fee.
Some reports suggest Brighton have already accepted a £75m offer from Chelsea for Caicedo. Although, the clubs are still trying to reach an agreement over add-ons and bonuses.
Assuming that is correct, the deal does indeed seem to be very much ‘on
