Chelsea Completes the Signing of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City

After securing Ziyech, Werner and being close to Havertz, Lampard has earned my trust on transfers.

He really wants Chilwell. Ashley Cole really wants Chilwell at Chelsea. He’s still only 23 years old.

Not my first choice, but I 100% back him if he does sign.

According to a Leicester source (@SmuelMartinFPL) Ben Chilwell packed his bags after Leicester training today.

He’s expected to undergo a Chelsea medical in the next couple of days. Unsure of the reliability of the source, but Leicester fans are suggesting he’s reliable.

It’s an all too familiar situation for Leicester City.

One of their star players is being courted by a richer club who have Champions League to offer.

Back in 2016, when they also had a European tour on the table, Jamie Vardy stayed. But since then, Danny Drinkwater, Riyad Mahrez, and Harry Maguire have said goodbye, City earning £175m for one high-profile departure each summer.

Now Ben Chilwell is wanted by Chelsea and you could forgive City fans for feeling they know how the story ends.

Well, there are four possible ways it goes from here. Here’s a look at each scenario.

Chilwell stays

Given the pattern of recent summers, this scenario may seem most unlikely. But it’s the one that City would consider ideal.

Chilwell is a homegrown talent turned England’s best left-back – of course they don’t want to let him go. The club has a better chance of achieving their ambitions with the strongest squad possible, and Chilwell is part of that.

Leicester City fans face ‘singing ban’ on King Power Stadium return
And it’s not a given that he will be sold. City are in a strong position, with four years remaining on the 23-year-old’s contract at the King Power Stadium.

What a successful new season looks like for Leicester City
They have shown in recent years that unless a satisfactory bid is made, the player stays. What is then being risked is how the player reacts. Denying Mahrez a move to Manchester City in January 2018 saw the Algerian go missing for 10 days, but he did return and scored a few crucial goals before finally upping sticks.

There are no suggestions Chilwell wouldn’t remain totally professional. Even if he does want a move, he can still be happy at City. Those feelings are not mutually exclusive.

City would still expect to see Chilwell at his best next season.

Chilwell goes, City spend big

While there won’t be a price-tag on Chilwell’s head, the club will have a valuation of the left-back. The difference is that it can’t be haggled.

But if Chelsea stump up enough cash to meet the valuation, then a transfer could go ahead.

Then comes the next step, and given how important full-backs are in the modern game, and to City’s success under Brendan Rodgers, they could spend a good portion of the Chilwell money on a replacement.

Chelsea reportedly on verge of closing Chilwell deal after Leicester defender ‘packs up’ belongings

Word is spreading across social media like wildfire this evening that Chelsea are on the verge of securing the signing of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.

The last couple of months have of course seen rumours rampant in the press that Chelsea are keen on Chilwell’s signing.

The capital giants have already reinforced their frontline with the respective additions of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, with Bayer Leverkusen sensation Kai Havertz also hotly tipped to link up with Frank Lampard’s squad.

As such, the widespread assumption is that the focus at Stamford Bridge will soon switch to adding new faces at the back.

Chelsea’s defence proved their undoubted weak point this past season, with the Pensioners having conceded a hefty 54 Premier League goals, more than any of the English top-flight’s other top-10 sides.

The disappointing form of both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri saw Frank Lampard often forced into utilising Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back, making a swoop for a proven Premier League left-full (of Chilwell’s ilk) this summer a priority on the southwest of London.

Chilwell imminent?
And, as outlined above, if the latest speculation stemming from social media tonight is to be believed, then Frank Lampard looks set to get his man.

As first reported by Sam Martin, regarded as reliable amongst Leicester City’s fans, Ben Chilwell gathered together his belongings at the Foxes’ training ground earlier today.

This comes ahead of an imminent medical at Chelsea:

After since being drawn on the major claims, meanwhile, Chelsea reporter Simon Phillips has also gone on to suggest that Chilwell looks set for Stamford Bridge
