Chelsea Completed the Signing of Malang Sarr, Signs five-year contract with Chelsea

Chelsea’s quest to sign all the players continues today, with reports of Malang Sarr agreeing a five-year deal with the Blues. These follow earlier stories from France, as well as conflicting reports from yesterday.

The 21-year-old center back left OGC Nice, his boyhood club and for whom he had already made 119 appearances, when his contract expired on June 30 and has been a free agent since. Chelsea have beaten out competition from a whole host of teams for the once very highly rated young defender.

Apparently Sarr is not being targeted as a first-team signing, but rather a cheap (no transfer fee) addition to the Loan Army, who could potentially break into the first-team next summer instead. Given his credentials, there’s plenty of interest already.

It’s a low risk move for the club — reminds me of Christian Atsu’s arrival, or even the likes of Michael Hector — but one that could pay dividends if Sarr can live up to the promise he has shown at times in his young career.

Chelsea are setting up to address the center back position in next summer’s transfer window, bringing in the veteran Thiago Silva now and serving notice to the likes of Antonio Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen, and Kurt Zouma. Time to step up, or step off.

In any case, sounds like we’ve got another one. Welcome, Malang Sarr.
